of egg nog and cattle sheds

Christmas! This week's topic for Thankful Thursday is...Christmas! Imagine that :).
I was driving home today from dinner with my sister and had this moment of "Vacation is coming to an end." And then I remembered. No, I live here. This rain is sticking around. Or maybe, I am sticking around this rain?
Anyway, I love Christmas. Overall, people are more cheerful, everyone greets each other with a greeting of some kind-mostly Merry Christmas (contrary to the murmurings you may hear on facebook). There is this hustle and bustle, anticipation and finding the perfect gift...on Amazon so you can shop in your pajamas. I was mostly talking about hustle and bustle at the grocery store although I did go into a few other stores. Online shopping means I didn't set my foot in the mall-not once. Talk about something to be thankful for- now that's a good one.
But, in all seriousness. Christmas, really is a season that brings people together. Extra effort is made to connect with friends and family. I'm thankful for the cards that hang on the wall, the phone call from our 90 year old neighbor....oh, and eggnog. (I found a recipe I can have!! So stoked to make it.) I'm glad I have this gigantic family-celebrations for days.
Most of all I am thankful that a long time ago, God sent His son, allowing him be born in a cattle shed. Because of all this, I have a reason to sing, laugh, live, give, and greet people with a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS! Aren't you glad?

A gift that marks the heart...

As a twelve year old girl I dreamed of horses. I longed to have my own. I saved up money, memorized Bible verses, and did every possible job to go to horse camp. I think it was that year at Christmas, I receive the most beautiful pair of black cowboy boots I had ever seen. Dad picked them out. They had fringes and were a soft suede leather. Pointed toes with silver tips and little silver buckles on the sides.
To this day, it's a gift I have never forgotten.
Thanks Dad for delighting my young girl heart!
What is your favorite gift you have ever received? Join me for this weeks Challenge #16 by posting in the comments! I would love to hear yours!

"Is it a match?"

Welcome to this weeks addition of the Gratitude Challenge. I bring to you today, "a favorite memory". It's not too late to join in the fun. Read about the challenge on my friend's blog here. We have been having a great time diving into different aspects of our lives that maybe we don't normally look into and appreciate.
As a kid we had two decks of memory cards carefully crafted by Gramma. They were made of cereal box cardboard or something slightly stronger, backed with colorful paper and sealed with home laminate. Each pair of cards were pictures, perfectly cut from magazines. There were dolls and scrubbing brushes and fathers holding children, dogs and cats and foods of different kinds. One of the sets was a maroon color and the other had a blue backing, I believe. Sometimes we would pay out both sets and cover the living room floor. I guess we must have worn them completely out because they are no longer around. There were certain sets I liked more than others and would always hope to match so they could be "mine." for the game. I wonder how many of my siblings played with these before they wore out? Mindy remembers a set made from juice can lids, so I guess they wore out somewhere between her and my childhood.
if you are looking for an inexpensive, creative gift for some kids in your life- they may enjoy a handmade memory set. Grab some magazines, scissors, laminating paper, cardboard, glue and a good Christmas album..and create some memories that will last a life time. (or keep it a little simpler, drink a lot of juice and save the round metal lids and use those. How much juice can you consume between now and Christmas?)

A Tale of Two Churches...

This week's highlight is my church home. I for the past several years have had two churches I have considered home. One in Denver and one here in the PNW. Why did I call them both home?
In Denver, whether I was gone for weeks or months I could walk in the door and be welcomed back in. There was no expectation that I, or my other YWAM friends, must join a ministry team to be involved in the church. Our full time ministry was valued at Bridgeway. I LOVED worship times when half the church was up front-dancing, weeping, praying, singing...The leadership has a strong sense of Fathering and releasing more than church growth. During my time there I saw several couples be released to go on to other ministries, plant churches, etc..all with the understanding that they were being entrusted to the Lord and going because HE wanted them to. This was the first church in Denver that I was able to really build multiple friendships and feel like I was connected fully. And the funny part was..it was the church I had attended that was the furthest from our base! A church strong in Spirit and strong in the Word of God.
Here now, I've returned to the church I was a part of when I left for Denver. Back then it was a brand new baby church so the face changed a lot in seven years. I am thankful that I have been given grace to make my way back in slowly, time to focus on healing and resting. I am thankful for the friendships being built, the Word of God is preached every week, there is value for missions and evangelism, and Jesus is King.
Also, both of these churches only have one service, which I enjoy because it means everyone who says they attend church there goes to the same one I do :).

Are you thankful for your home church? What are you thankful for about it? How has being a part of that family impacted your life? How are you being spurred on to love and good deeds (Heb. 10:24) because of the body surrounding you?

Warning...this post may make you want to live in Colorado.

I am so excited to write this post! We are already 13 weeks into the Gratitude Challenge. It seems time is just flying by, when I look at it in this context.
WINTER!!!!
Things I love about Winter....When I think of Winter my thoughts go to NH and to Colorado. It is a little more difficult to love winter here in the PNW. But none the less...the things I love about Winter remain the same.
First of all, I love to wear scarves and hoodies and mittens and hats. I love boots and all the fun.
Snow. Snow. Snow. Yes, I am one of "them." Those people who love the snow. it is so white and beautiful and makes everything that was brown and dreary look fresh and hopeful. The snow brings about this amazing silence that is like nothing else. When you step outside on a snowy day, the flakes are falling and you catch one on your tongue and then you just listen to the silence. It is SO beautiful! I loved to walk to work on snowy days and just enjoy seeing my breath puffing along and hear the crunchy squeak of the snow under my feet on the unshoveled sidewalks.
Also, snow means snowboarding. I am hoping and praying that this year I will be able to go, energy permitting. I have missed strapping my feet in, and riding into the silence. Unless of course its a windy day... Generally riding on the mountain is just this epic solitude with only the sound of your board cutting into the snow. The occasional rider or skier passing by and laughter of friends. Then there is always fun conversations with people on the ski lifts. I miss delivering cookies to the lifties. At Breckenridge every Sunday morning there is this amazing lady, Pat, who brings cookies to be delivered to all the lift operators and then she hosts a church service right there on the mountain. It was really incredible to be a part of that ministry for a few years.
I love fireplaces, hot drinks, and cozy blankets. Oh, and ice skating. Don't you just love it? On lakes, on outdoor rinks, I suppose on an indoor one if you must...
And did I mention CHRISTMAS? Christmas comes in winter. And New Years. And Valentine's Day..and sometimes Thanksgiving feels like it comes in winter :).
..writing this post has made me miss Colorado. Especially since Winter has begun there. Love to all my Colorado peeps. Enjoy the mountains and the winter for me.
The other part of winter that I love is when warm days begin and Springs starts to come. there is this sense of a new beginning at the end of winter.
And just as all good things must come to an end, so must this post. Until next time.

Admiring the gift of God in others...

This week, I am running late on my Thankful post once again. We finally got the internet hooked up Thursday evening so now I really have no excuse (except that I was busy with a bazaar...:).)
Anyway, our topic this time around is "a personality trait you admire."
I admire naturally compassionate and thoughtful people so much. When someone can walk into a room and see a broken heart and offer comfort, can sense when someone needs a hand...has the ability to make someone feel noticed, valuable, and loved- what a gift!
You know that friend that when you are with them you feel like you have their full attention? You know your conversation is what they are engaged in, they possess the art of being fully present.
I aspire to this trait.
Put the phone away.
Forget the bustle around.
Stop, listen, love.
This is the personality of a beautiful person.
Lord, let us each one learn to love and listen and be this friend.
Thank you Jesus for being this friend to us.
Always fully present when we speak with you.
Noticing, valuing, loving, offering kindness, sensing needs.
Thank you Sweet Jesus.
let me be like you.
Amen.

Inspired. Truly. Gratitude Chalłenge

What does it mean to be inspired by someone? Just have our feelings tickled? Someone we applaud and say...good job, you are an inspiration...and go on about our day virtually unaffected-really? No, I don't think so! Someone who inspires us is a person who provokes us to change, to take action, to become a better version of ourselves.
This week the challenge is write of someone who has inspired me. There are authors, friends, coworkers, other missionaries... I am really grateful there have been so many people in my life who have impacted me.
These past months since I've been back in the PNW I have been able to spend a lot of time with my Gramma. Every time we chat she drops little nuggets of truth.
Here are three things that I have learned from my sweet Gramma, because she passed them on to her children (my dad) and I have witnessed them in her life.

1. The Word of God trumps how we feel and enables us to face life.

2. Music and books matter. Words are powerful.

3. Life isn't about me.

What Dylan and Deja taught me...

Years ago I had a daycare class of 13 boys and one sweet girl. It was a stretching season in my life but I learned a lot out Gods heart in that season and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
My one little lady was Deja...she was a beautiful child who could not speak and didn't have good motor skills. Caring for her taught me how to say I love you without words. She gave the best hugs..
Dylan was her protector. He was fiercely loyal to her, always ready to defend her, find her coat, pick up her spoon or be tackled go the floor by her laughing little rambunctious self. She loved him and hey we're inseparable! Dylan exhibited selflessness in a way that is rare in someone so young.
One lesson Dylan taught me came in the form of morning playground time. He would come to the gate with his mom in the morning, hugging her and not wanting her to leave, but then he would see me and get a big grin on his face and come jump into my arms. ( He was not exactly a small kid at 3 1/2.) then He'd want to be held a bit and then chased; soon there would be shouts of "Miss Carmen please push me on the swing!" I saw though him a lesson in trust. It was hard to say good bye to his mom but then He would step through the gate and know he was in a safe place..the freedom in trusting the One who cares for you. Not a perfect example by any means but I feel like God used it to show me a bit of His heart and how He feels when we step into His realm...His playground and run free "Catch me Papa", "Watch me", "Do you see what I can do?"
I am so Thankful for the year I had with Dylan. He is in High School now, and I doubt he remembers much from that year of his life, but I hope and pray he walks today knowing He is loved by a Precious Heavenly Father who cares for his life incredibly much, I hope he still defends the weak and carries the gift of compassion with him each day.

BG ...Let's hear it for #9

I had an "it's Thursday?!" moment... and realized this past week went really quickly...not sure what I was doing, but it's time to post my Thankful Thursday post again...
Ok, technically I live in the country and the nearest town is ten minutes and the nearest city is 25. But this weeks' topic is gratefulness for the city in which I live. Do I have to? Ok, fine..I know I need to because gratefulness is what will cultivate my perspective shift..so here goes. I am going to go with the closest town since it's the place I know the best, and perhaps I will expand to the fringes.

For starters, I am really grateful I don't live smack in the middle of the town. I've done my time in the subdivision world. (I loved living in CO so don't get me wrong..I'd live in a subdivision there any day again.) But for now, I am glad to live where there are a few dirt roads, there is grass surrounding the house, I can plant a garden and my nephews can build forts in the woods.
But, of the town...
It holds a certain quaintness. There is a lovely little coffee shop in an old church that is really tasty...and a guaranteed place to see someone you know. On that same end of town are all kinds of vintage and "pinteresty" kind of shops. I went once with my cousin Heidi, it was a good time.
The other end of town sports a great Thai restaurant and the best sushi place...

There is a little book store that I enjoy browsing in..and I generally find at least one or two good titles to take on out the door with me. You can exchange your books there for a credit as well. Problem is, I seldom get rid of any books.
I love the park up the highway from the town, Its a beautiful many acred, wooded land with plenty of trails and green grass and the bubbling river, lots of swing sets and places to play sports.

Welllllllll....thats about it for this week. Until the next one :).

Built in friends...week #8

My sisters, the ones with whom I can burst into random song, stay up til 2 am having a heart to heart, ask for advice on wardrobe decisions, borrow their belts and sweaters, join for picnics and spur of the moment shopping trips....
There are six of us, and never a dull moment when we are together. When I lived in Colorado I would tell people they would know me better if they saw me with my sisters. They bring out the goofy side of me. I might be the oldest, but I have gained much wisdom from them, been challenged and grown because of them.
I love piling on the couch with them, flopping on their beds beside them, taking a hike, riding a bike, and those moments with Julie of "clap, clap, motivation" which go no where.
One night when I was temporarily moved back in with Julie (thanks for begrudgingly sharing your space for a couple of months) we laid in bed and interpreted dreams for each other.
I am about to become Mindy's roommate. I've never really shared a room with any of my sisters except the above mentioned, but that was her own space, not really a 'shared' space. I'm looking forward to it! I guess I did share when we were very small...but then there were brothers in there too.
My sisters and I all tend to be pretty different and independent- but this we share: Love for Jesus, humor, and creativity.
Love you all - Christy, Julie, Mindy, Renae and Emily!

it's not too late to join the challenge! We are on week 8, but it will continue until next September! My friend Carrie and I are doing it..and we would love to have you with us!

Taken for Granted...#7

The things I take for granted are the things I do not think about..so to think about what I do not think about is an interesting task. Welcome to the challenge week #7.

Potlucks and Sunday night visiting. Saturday night saunas and drop in visitors. The days when dropping by was normal and you didn't have to plan to have relationships..you just did them. Oh,  what I have taken for granted and what I am so grateful to know as my childhood "normal".
Growing up Apostolic these things were the norm. Weekend would come and we would ask "can we go visiting?" Dad would pick up the phone and call just to see if someone was home. Or we would just hop in the van and go check. If you stayed home it meant the opportunity for someone to come "visiting" at your house. My best of friends as a child were because we had countless weekends playing together. We frequented Carrie and Diana's (one of my all time favorite visiting locations). Sometimes we would go clear up to Clatskanie to Kendra's where we would write stories and spy on the boys and dream up all sorts of adventures. Then there was the sauna places. One home we went to had so many "little peoples" to play with we ever got bored. Oh...I never knew people didn't have saunas or at least know someone who did. I mean, we didn't have one, but of course we knew plenty of places to get one. They weren't just something you used in a gym..they were where you got clean on a Saturday night.
The strength of the hospitality culture I grew up in was something I took for granted, until I didn't have it around me any more. It's more than hospitality even..it's a sense that someone always has your back. You'll never end up on the street..you have family everywhere. When someone had a baby, people rallied and cooked meals. If you were sick and at the hospital, there was no shortage of visitors and meals and prayer.
And..people love to sing. Every time you would get a group of people together- if someone can play the piano then you have some singing. And there would be plates of treats..always if you go visiting- you bring a snack. The nissu and coffee and crackers and mucceda (I have NEVER tried to spell that word in my life..but some people call it summer sausage) comes out and there is a glorious array of tasty treats whether there are many or few present.
Our visiting days were to the young and the old. We'd visit Aunt Penny and Uncle Lew- there we could play in the barn. At Karl and Becky's there was loads of books to read and the old Carmen Sandiego game on the green screen mac. We'd pick beans at Lorretta's and watch the fish at Chelle's...
Yes, I took this for granted.
Yes, I am thankful for these memories...and someday, when I have kids, I want them to experience the "visiting" culture. But to have that happen I must be interruptible, to value relationship more than agenda..and slow down.

Gracious God. I'm so Thankful...#6

Week 5's challenge: "A challenge you have overcome" How about writing this post? (learn about the Thankful challenge here.)
An overcome challenge never seems as large in hindsight as when you are right in the middle of it. I've been reflecting back on my life and considering different seasons and challenges and many of them I think..is that really worth writing about in my blog? Was it really that big of a hurdle? I mean..when you are five, learning to tie your shoe seems like such a big challenge. At 15, driving a car is scary and overwhelming. The first time you move away from the task of paying bills, furnishing a home, buying your own groceries, it is all quite daunting.
So, I am exceedingly grateful for all the challenges I have overcome in my life and that none of them are quite so vast on the other side. I could keep it simple and tell you how learning to read has changed my life. You know, I overcame that challenge a long time ago and it's influenced my life every day since- guaranteed.
Instead, I'll share about another, more recent challenge that I have over come... One that sticks in my mind is leading outreach teams. When I joined YWAM in 2008 as a staff member I wanted to disciple and assist outreach teams. I had no interest whatsoever in being a primary leader. I dove into every opportunity (except working in the kitchen...now looking back, that's a whole different thing I've overcome! I love to cook now! Yay!) - whether it was onsite student discipleship, office work, cleaning, assisting schools, and more. Within five months of being on staff I was asked to assist an outreach to Mexico- excited and VERY nervous, I said yes. A year later, I said yes again to assisting an Around the World team. I began to be asked to take a team myself- each time I would turn it down, scared to bits at the thought of being in charge of a group of people all myself.
During the summer of 2011 I was in Huntington Beach, CA setting up the Circuit Rider Outreach for over 200 people. Four of us were detailing logistics before the arrival of staff and students from Hawaii and Colorado. It was there that I felt the nudging of the Lord..."You can do this, it's time to lead." You know those times when your palms sweat and your heart is pounding and you are scared but you say yes anyway...it was one of those times.
So, upon returning to the base I stepped forward and said "I'll lead". Oh man, I was SOOO terrified. What was I in for? Would I have good students? Jesus PLEASE prepare the way! After a lot of prayer the locations were picked: London and Romania.
That January as the students were arriving in Denver, I had a dream that I was up on a hillside, on top of old building ruins that overlooked London. I was with my team and some guy named Shawn (means: God is Gracious or Gift from God.) On this hillside I began to sing something simple like "God loves us." I don't remember exactly what it was...in my dream my team joined in with me and then slowly the city joined us. The song became so deafening I actually jolted awake. This happened before I knew who my team would be.
While I was preparing my team, my friend Derek was preparing a team from the Boarders DTS. God IS so gracious- he gave me a friend to lead along side because our teams worked together during the London portion of our outreach. Our teams gelled so well that one time when we asked them to meet separately they got confused!
Toward the end of our time in London we were praying about where to have a time of worship. It was suggested several times that we go up to Crystal Palace Park. Many of our team had been up there but for whatever reason (probably meeting for other ministry prep) I had not been there. As we climbed the steps to the top of the park..I realized where we were...we were standing on ruins of a building that overlooked the city...about to worship and intercede. I nearly cried.
GOD IS SO GRACIOUS!!!! There are just times that you know that you know that you know you are where you need to be.
I am so Thankful I said yes- even in the midst of being afraid.
P.S. I also had AMAZING students.

The Simple Things- Thankful Thursday #5

The things we forget about, take for granted, overlook, don't realize other's live without....

Rain pouring from the gutters-not into the house
Washers and dryers.
Cameras to capture moments.
Grocery stores.
Flushing toilets and hot showers.
Airplanes and cars-  I've travelled by many other modes, these are wonderful gifts.
Heat at the flip of a switch. (and cold air too.)
More than one pair of shoes.
Clean water to drink.
CHOICES when it comes to food.
Eating off of a plate-with silverware.
Blow dryers and towels.
The ability to read and write.
Walking outside freely.
Shoes. More than one pair.
Soap. Shampoo.
Almond butter. Of course.

In so many places these things are not "simple" and available. Enjoy. Cherish. Stop..and smell those roses.

Thankful Thursday Week #4:Topic-Spouse

I suppose this weeks topic could technically be changed since I lack a spouse. But I will keep the topic and have challenged myself to look for ways I am grateful in the absence of a spouse.
If you have no idea why I am writing about this..check out the challenge!

If I had a spouse:

1) I may not have travelled to Mexico, Belize, Nicaragua, Honduras, South Korea, Hong Kong, South Africa, Uganda, France, Spain, Haiti, Dominican Republic, England, Hungary, Romania, Kenya, Ecuador, Nepal, India, Thailand, Jamaica, or The Cayman Islands... I've seen so much of the world, I know which cultures tug at my heart and which ones push me to my limits. I have seen the face of God in the faces of the nations. I have seen where He is at work and know what worshiping Him sounds like in many tongues.

2) I would need to consult with someone those times when I wanted to visit a friend, spend $, go hiking, take a vacation, buy a plane ticket....instead I (not always faithfully) consult the Lord and talk these things over with Him. I mean the spouse would need dinner at night, you know, I couldn't really just say "I'm going to go and spend time with so and so, sorry you are on your own."

3) My time would be divided. I have ample free time to spend with the Lord when I choose to spend it that way. I've had to learn to lean.

4) I might only know how to live with one personality (except my family of course) instead I've gotten to learn to live with many personality types and have had my life enriched by my roommates through the years: Autumn, Audrey, Amanda, Miranda, Shana, Shawnie, Brianna, YWAM school roommates (14 was a lot to list), The Dearings, Amy, Alli, Stacy, and Sarah.

5) I might have more gray hair than I do.

6) I might not have the relationships with my nieces and nephews. I mean firstly, if I had a spouse I would probably have kids of my own. Being a single aunt means that my nieces and nephews get gifts, time, and conversation that likely would not happen otherwise. It also means that I able to be here in New England when my brand new little niece Vivienne Alice was born TODAY! :)

For these reasons I am choosing Thankfulness for my single life. Today, it is a gift from Jesus that I embrace. Today is the day for looking at the upside. Thankful Thursday.

Thankful Thursday Week #3- Things I like about Fall

I love Fall.
The colorful leaves crunching underfoot.
Windy moments.
The cool crispy mornings with hot afternoons.
From boots to sandals in a day.
Hot drinks, hot soups..
Squash and pumpkin everything.
Scarves and hats and jeans and sweatshirts.
Thanksgiving.
Christmas is coming around the corner.
Apple picking, pumpkin pie, fireplaces...
Cozy blankets, slippers, hats.
Change.

Thankful Thursday Week #2

This week's topic: Family

Right now I am so grateful for the way my family has been patient with me as I have been navigating health recovery. They have had grace for me when I don't have grace for myself.
It's been a roller coaster year and in the midst of it my family has let me cry on their shoulders, lay on their couches, driven me to the doctor, made me food, looked at the meteor showers with me on the tramp, be a wimp at Crossfit and cheered me on as I've gained, helped me plant a garden, listened to me ramble, found me odd jobs, picked up supplements...and more. And that's just how they have blessed me. Let's look at how they live and bless others.
Mom puts her heart and soul into running the youth camp each summer. Dad faithfully works long hours to put food on the table and keep a roof over everyone's heads. He also loves to teach and makes an impact each time he has the opportunity. Michael shares his Crossfit knowledge. Christy is constantly inspiring me with her homeschooling and intentional childrearing. Julie is traveling the world sharing Jesus with people. Andy is always willing to fix a car or create something useful out of bits and pieces. Jesse gives thoughtful gifts, pays attention to what you say and likes to host functions. Add Mindy to that hospitality piece; she's also a very committed person so I know she blesses those she works with every day. Renae brings laughter and fun to people's lives and is always willing to host a friend for the night. Jamon does the dishes on occasion, is quick to share his opinions and is also quite crafty- he blessed mom with a new hand made cutting board this past Christmas. Emily would constantly live in a circle of friends-she'd also buy them all the gifts in the world if she could, she loves to give and loves to live.
I just stuck to my immediate family because if I went into in-laws and nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles and grammas and grandpas and cousins and such I would be here all day. So, this is enough for now!

Gratitude Challenge Week 1

I'm going to join my friend Carrie in a Gratitude challenge, posting each week on the related topic. Some of them may not fully relate to my life but I think I can use the topic and challenge myself to see a grateful side of it! Here's the list:
I may post other blogs in between.

Most recent project!

Each year mom and dad host a youth camp. I didn't really have the energy yet to get super involved but this was one way I could contribute and hone my skills at the same time. This was the back drop for the stage. it's about 15 feet long and 6 feet high in the highest point. It got me motivated to get back to my painting again. I've worked a little on my big canvas, but haven't been too diligent.

A friend of mine posted this blog link about missionary life today and I connected with it so much. Especially the end where they talked about stopping dreaming. Standing on the other side at this time in my life I am praying to be an advocate and cheer leader of my friends and family who are serving daily on the active mission field. Yes, we all stand in a mission field of a kind, but there is something special, significant and a lot more difficult when choosing to have it be your full time job-your life-your focus.
To my friends and family in YWAM, in the ALC foreign Mission, other's serving in overseas locations...I love you guys and understand.

A splish splash of summer photos

Bike riding with my sisters before the weather got to warm.

One visit to Gramma's house I discovered an old favorite mug hanging on the wall! Perhaps my love of particular mugs comes from my Gramma and her collection.

My sister Julie has come to town twice.

Silver Star

My cousin Heidi and I made it to the top of Silver Star!

Karl's memorial Cross up near Silver Star

We've made pirate ships....

And spy glasses....

And my littlest sister (and cousin Danya) graduated 8th grade.
of course, Father's day comes every year...

But this year was special- Dad and I went up to the mountains that evening!

My sweet friend Donna came to Oregon to speak and I met up with her for dinner. The only downside was crying on the way home missing everyone in Denver.

4th of July I went hiking at Zig Zag lake with a couple of friends. The water was WARM.

We said good bye to Chalandra at her shower-we miss her at work!

Kathryn came all the way from Australia and then I was able to go to Ohio for Mike and Halle's wedding. Sarah joined us and it was a happy reunion!

Mike and Halle were on my London team and it was such a special treat to be at their wedding. From start to finish it reflected the love and joy of Jesus. Their marriage is a testimony of the goodness of God and how worth it it is to wait for God's best.

And that's just a taste...it's been a good summer, and certainly different than previous ones.

What's in a name?

We finally had the chance to meet a couple of weeks ago :)
Carmen Joy and Carmen Joy

Here is the link to the blog I wrote regarding Carmen a while back:
My Great Uncle is asking for stories on Friendship for his little newsletter this month, so I thought I would write up a little one since it's a fun God story!

My friend submission for the Tin Can:
I thought I would share a story about the most unusual gift of friendship I have been given to date. About twenty years ago, a good friend of mine sent me an email to my juno address ...except much to her chagrin it did not go to me..it went to Carmenjoy, while mine was Carmenjoy1. The owner of the other email sent her a message and let her know she had the wrong Carmen Joy. After receiving several emails that belonged to me, the other Carmen Joy sent me an email and we discovered we had a lot in common. She was 4 years ahead of me and attending Multnomah. We both loved Jesus! She really encouraged me in my walk with the Lord and challenged me in little ways, like choosing not to send out forwards when they were not wise to send..you know the ones that said "if you send this you will have this or that wish come true.." sometimes as a kid I missed what those things really meant. As the years went on Carmen met her husband, finished college and went overseas to the Philippines. Around the time they came back to states, I went to YWAM. All of these twenty years we swapped Christmas cards, newsletters, prayer requests, and pictures- never once meeting face to face. Though she was even born and raised in Colorado, where I lived for 7 years. In 2014, Carmen moved back to the NW with her husband and kids (they still serve in missions and she is now teaching part time at her old college.) and I'm also back in the NW. About a month ago she and I FINALLY had the opportunity to meet face to face! What a gift! She's a dear friend and it was incredible to meet. It's a miracle in this day to stay in touch with someone you have never met for twenty years! I hope we have many more opportunities to spend time together in the years to come.

Three parts...

Soul Gains:
"It is well with my soul..."
What is a "well" soul? As we sang this yesterday in church it dawned on me..a well soul is one that is able to feel and process emotion in a healthy way...wow. Maybe this isn't a revelation to you but it was so life giving to me. Without realizing it, I have believed that a well soul is one that is able to control emotions- in other words- remain slightly stoic. Can you imagine, the guy who penned these lines-staring at the sea where he lost his family, feeling no emotions? No probably not..he probably cried, and yet...as he grieved..he knew, it was well. I'm more of a stuffer of emotions than a processor of them..what about you? Sometimes it is even difficult for me to show great joy. (well except for the unexpected moment that mom brings home dried seaweed and I get really excited?!) ...but seriously, it's delicious.

Physical Gains:
1. A 6 mile bike ride- loving my new bike.
2. I hiked to the top of Silverstar (it took us an hour longer than the other girls but my cousin Heidi and I did it!)
3. I've started Crossfit. Sometimes I feel like a wimp when I can only lift 22 pounds but hey...I'm working out! And anything beyond that is a bonus!

Spirit Gains:
I loved the book Scary Close, it's the best of Donald Miller I have read to date. I could go through the book and write a lot of quotes..but instead, I will just say, read it. Be challenged and reminded that you also are "good at relationships", that you can change, that grace sticks to your imperfections and gives you the freedom to take off your mask and be fully you. His grace is enough.

Getting back into blogging.

Exactly a year ago I boarded a plane with 7 young people-on our way for leg one of our adventure Around the World. I had spent the prior year praying, preparing, planning, dreaming, and then it was here. As I got on the plane I wondered...would this be my last team? Would there be more? But in my heart of hearts I wondered if some changes were coming.
Now, looking back, I realize that yes, there were some changes up ahead.
I didn't know it would be as drastic as they were, or that they would come about in the way they did.
I'm thankful for that trip. I am thankful for the transformation I saw in those 7. I'm thankful they became my friends. I am thankful for those I met and those who I got to see again.
An honest moment: it's hard to say good bye to a season that was so rich and fruitful..to enter into one where it feels like all is being pruned right off. I was talking with a friend about gardens and pruning yesterday....about tying fruit trees down so that they bear more fruit and grow properly-allowing sunlight to hit more places. I think maybe that's a bit of what it going on in my life right now. God's been tying down some branches-to allow more light to hit more places. I certainly felt a little pinned down when I was sick and not getting up and about much! ( I am happy to say-I am getting back to my normal active self again!)
I started a little garden this year, my dad helped me build the space. Here it is:

I kind of wanted to stop blogging because it would be easier. But I think I need to keep writing..to keep risking...to keep being vulnerable. I am reading Donald Miller's book Scary Close. About vulnerability and relationships. Sometimes I think, he's talking about me. Hmm. Another way of getting pruned? Or maybe it's fertilizer. At any rate...This post is all over the place..but it's just me, getting back into the practice of writing again after not writing anywhere but my journal for a while.
Here's my other project.. which I enjoyed the fruits of SO MUCH this past weekend.

One year ago I was traveling the world, now I am making gardens and restoring bicycles. Who knows what could be going on a year from now!
Now that I have written all kinds of random things,  I am going to go...and finish reading that book.

The Long Road home...
I made it back to Denver on Sunday afternoon. One day later than planned. We stopped for the night in Wyoming. Brought back memories of seven years ago when my friend Cheryl and had to stop in the same town-but not by choice. That time we had to stay in the armory. This time I slept in a bed in a hotel.
It had started snowing not too far in to the wyoming border and since we knew Denver was about to get the biggest snowstorm of the year we thought it best to just stop and rest.
Since being back I have kinda taken what feels like a few steps backwards which is frustrating and disappointing but also realizing that I need to be okay with a slow process.
So instead of focusing on the hard stuff here are some things I am super thankful for today:
1. The sun in shining and the sky is brilliant blue.
2. Icicles are melting and keep clattering to the ground.
3. Ronda is staying for the week.
4. I have permission to take my time easing back into YWAM life.
5. My house is cozy and warm. (maybe even a little too warm!)
6. We made it safely here.
7. Dad's salmon is thawing in the fridge for dinner tonight!
...That's all for now.

A little tribute.

This season of full time rest is coming to a close. I am so thankful for a few months to rest and recover. Next Friday, Lord willing, I will be on the road back to the middle of the USA- the Bridge to the Nations.
I am approaching this with relief, excitement and a bit of uncertainty as I have no idea what this coming year holds..beyond being faithful where He has asked me to be- and He who calls is SO faithful.
As I look back on the past 3 1/2 months, I've had much time to reflect, to process and to spend time with people I love and cherish.
Today was the celebration of the life of someone who, though not an real uncle, was much like one to me. My dad's cousin Karl. He's with Jesus now, his journey is done. So tonight I thought I would honor him by sharing some of thing things I learned through the years from Karl and his wife, Becky. Some of my earliest memories are from being at the their house. It always feels like home there.
When I was about 12 I got to go to the church Youth Bible Study. He lead the study with my dad. Not too many years later they moved on from the church and went to a different one. But over the years Karl and Becky stayed in many ways as spiritual pillars in my life. It didn't matter that we worshiped inside of different walls on sunday morning. When my friends and I started a Bible study, they cheered us on-even hosted a few in their home. And then when we felt like we were supposed to run a camp for the local youth, to give them an opportunity to experience what we had been discovering going deep in God's word,  Karl and Becky (along with my mom and dad) were some of the few who stood by us through it and believed in what God wanted to do. When you have people who believe in you-so much is possible. Karl believed in people and he and Becky are also bridge builders- they've paved the way for a lot of people to run the race successfully-loving Jesus all the way. I learned not to shrink back from being obedient to Jesus. And that it is possible to maintain relationships in a culture where relationships often got severed when there were differences. Life's too short for that.
Maybe this is a little my way of processing for tonight...thanks for joining me...love well my friends. Leave a legacy of love and joy and purpose.

A Book Review

When I was younger I would often read a book in a 24 hour time span-or less. These days it's rare, particularly a book that is not a novel. But, when I got The Meaning of Marriage in the mail, I had a hard time putting it down.
I highly recommend this book to my single and married friends alike. The author, Timothy Keller, has a refreshing perspective and great insight on the purpose and mission of marriage. He starts out by saying "no two people are entirely compatible" and that we can not possibly marry the "right" person. Why? Because we CHANGE! I loved this quote he mentioned from Stanley Hauerwas "We never know whom we marry; we just think we do." No, he wasn't saying 'so just marry whoever and try to make it work', but rather-be aware that you are committing to a person who will change.
I heard the message -less stress about meeting 'the one'. Though, personally I do believe that in walking with Jesus there is the BEST, because he is leading. Keller's emphasis is on the importance of friendship for a marriage relationship. "This principle- that your spouse should be capable of becoming your best friend-is a game changer when you address the question of compatibility in a prospective spouse." Reminded me of the conversation I had with my Uncle Joel on the way to the airport the day before I read the book- he said "people don't put enough stock in friendship these days."...and then I was reading this and realizing what he was referring to-yes there is romance and all that, but friendship is what will help you get through the hard times and make the good times great. I also loved this quote "Look for someone who understands you better than you do yourself, who makes you a better person just by being around them." Here's back to praying for a friendship! (I used to, but then got sick of all the friendships that never went anywhere..-vulnerability moment. Yeeps.)
One other main theme in the book is the power of commitment and the value of covenant. As a culture, on a whole, we do not have a strong understanding of covenant. Keller's insight on the trending belief that marriage is a consumer relationship as opposed to a covenant relationship was something I have recognized but I don't think I have ever pondered. Obviously, if we treat someone as expendable-when something "better" is found a person goes on to the next. Covenant says before the Lord, I am bound to you-regardless. Loved this quote "[Marriage] is a relationship that is more intimate because it is legal." There is freedom in promising-it causes us to rise above our limitations and enables us to trust one another.
I've never written a book review before, only book reports back in my schools. I just wanted to put this out there as a recommendation. Worth the read!! Five stars...all that goodness.
I'll end with this quote "To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything. It liberates us from pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness and fortifies us from any difficulty life can throw at us."

Quotes..

  • I was looking at a website for some other things and came across these Oswald Chambers quotes that really challenged me in this current season. I thought I would pass them along.

  • Never try to help God fulfill His Word. -Oswald Chambers
In the difficulty of waiting this is often a great temptation. To go ahead of God. To think that because He has said something will happen, that indeed it must be now. But how are we to know the season in which something will take place?

  • If our hopes are being disappointed now, it means they are being purified. -Oswald Chambers
Still in the process of getting healthy again it seems my hopes are often getting disappointed. This quote really encouraged me!

  • Fretting springs from our determination to get our own way. All our fretting and worry is caused by calculating without God. -Oswald Chambers
Yikes! Reminds me of James 4-saying is year we will go and do this or that.... do you not know that your life is but a mist that is here for a short time and then vanishes away? Instead say "If God wills..."

"Be anxious for nothing, but instead by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving make your requests known to God and the peace that passes all understanding WILL gaurd your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."  Phil. 4:6
