Once a week I filed papers in the accounting office as a Phase II (Leadership training) student. It was always a fun couple of hours. I got to know the YWAM staff who worked in the office and really enjoyed learning bits and pieces of how it all worked from a financial stand point. When I went through with my staff interview and was officially joining the team after the training was finished, almost immediately I was approached by the department director, Cary. He asked me if I would like to work in the accounting office. I don't fully remember the conversation, just that I told him I'd be willing to try it out. You guys- I was the day care girl, reading teacher, nanny, camp counselor...not exactly qualifications for an accounting office!
I am SO thankful that Cary saw in me something that I didn't see in myself and gave me an opportunity to learn from the ground up. In the process I discovered a few things:
1. I love budgets
2. Problem solving is fun to me..
3. #'s are easier than people because they have to eventually add up.
4. I like to have tasks, but I also like to be interrupted in the those tasks with either more urgent tasks, peoples questions or some other thing..like hearing someone's story about their day.
Often the opportunities we are given are doors to new adventures that we would never know we would enjoy if we didn't take the risk and step through into the unknown.
I can't tell Cary any more how much I appreciate the door he invited me through, he's been with Jesus for several years..but I'll say it anyway..Thanks Cary.
And thanks Josh..my accounting team mate who taught me everything for the day to day..and Nathan for teaching me even more...and Sarah and Clara for letting me pass on to you everything that I learned.
No longer am I the nanny, teacher, daycare girl..I still like kids though..so I am really thankful that since my job now is in a home I get my interruptions from four cute kiddos who come in to ask for the scissors, the tape, a paper clip..you name it..or they just come in to tell me about their day-sometimes I get to see the latest photos from the weekend, or we take a few minutes to set up a science experiment in the middle of the office.
Because of the opportunities I had in YWAM to learn quickbooks and basic accounting skills I now have a great job for a local company. I know it's just a stepping stone toward more things in the future as I would love to become a financial coach and put three things I love most together: discipleship, budgeting and hospitality (yes, we will talk about your budget over coffee in some comfortable chairs). But in the mean time I am filled with gratitude for what I am doing now.
What door did YOU step through that led to more than you could have thought?
